Autumn Adventures on the Horizon

Arcachon Bay has its charm all year long, but there’s something extra magical about autumn. The cooler air, quieter streets, and softer light make everything feel more intimate. The crowds of summer tourists are gone, leaving behind a sense of calm that invites you to slow down and truly explore. Jon and I have been making plans for when he’s feeling better, imagining all the ways we can embrace the season around here. With so many beautiful places close by, it feels like the perfect backdrop for some peaceful, meaningful moments.

One of the first things on our list is the Dune du Pilat. We’re really looking forward to climbing to the top without the sweltering heat or throngs of visitors, where the vast Atlantic meets the horizon, and the forest stretches out beneath you. With the cool autumn breeze in our faces and the sound of waves crashing far below, it feels like a place where time stands still. After everything we’ve been navigating lately, I can’t think of a better spot to soak in some peace and perspective.

I’m also excited to dive into some of the local seafood, especially the famous oysters from the bay. The markets in towns like Gujan-Mestras and Arcachon are filled with freshly caught seafood, and there’s something special about sitting by the water with a plate of oysters and a glass of crisp white wine. I know Jon will pass on the oysters, but we’ve already found a few cozy bakeries that serve up the best pastries and hot chocolate—perfect for chilly autumn mornings when we need a little warmth.

We’ve also talked about taking a boat trip across the bay to Cap Ferret. It’s known for its laid-back atmosphere, charming lighthouse, and long, quiet beaches. I can picture us walking along the shore, the sea breeze in our faces, and popping into some of the small shops along the way. If we time it right, we might catch one of those breathtaking

autumn sunsets that light up the sky in golden hues and streaks of stormy clouds. The views from Cap Ferret are some of the best in the area, and it’s the kind of peaceful escape we’ve both been craving.

Closer to home in Gujan-Mestras, there are a few forest trails that I’ve been wanting to explore. The pine trees smell even fresher in the cooler weather, and the forest floor is scattered with pinecones and crunchy leaves. Frankie will love racing along the paths, her energy adding a playful feel to the peaceful surroundings. There’s something soothing about being in nature when the air is crisp, and I know these walks will be perfect for Jon when he’s ready to get out and about again.

There’s so much to do around Arcachon Bay in the fall, and while we’re taking things slow right now, I can’t wait for us to get back out there. From hiking up sandy dunes to cozy café afternoons, and scenic boat rides, it all feels a little more special knowing how much we have to look forward to. Until then, the beauty of autumn reminds us to be patient, to savor the small things, and to look forward to brighter days ahead.
